Relevance of the Educational Background of East Asian Filmmakers

Studying a handful of East Asian filmmakers and how relevant their educational background is to their work in films, some examples:

• Wong Karwai, studied graphic design.

Wong is remarkable for the stunning visual composition of his films used to deliver stories in a smooth manner.

• Bong Joonho, studied sociology.

Bong’s films are known to have sociocritical undertone in its stories.

• Kitano Takeshi, studied mechanical engineering.

Kitano is known for his static camerawork, whereas mechanical engineering weighs a lot on movement. His scenes turn out very simple yet meaningful.

• Hung Sammo, studied Peking Opera.

Much like his colleagues in the Hong Kong martial arts cinema scene, Hung takes his knowledge on acrobatics, martial arts, etc. from Peking Opera to film and incorporated some comedy into it.

• Park Chanwook, studied philosophy.

Park is known for his innovative plots which required a lot of critical thinking going into it. Also, his characters are pretty much sketches of human nature.

• Kurosawa Akira, studied painting.

I personally consider him one of the biggest figures in cinema, and i think it’s due to his in-depth knowledge of how filmmaking should be—art of motion. To craft his movies, he paint his storyboards beforehand, much like this:
